Kitchen Tools

Broom making skills can be used to create other beautiful and useful items for the home, particularly kitchen tools. Tampico fiber has an excellent texture for scrubbing when kept short. Tied tight and cut short, broomcorn ends can take the place of a scouring pad.

Tampico Brushes
Tampico brushes are a versatile kitchen tool. They make great dish brushes, veggie brushes, and mushroom brushes. I have also had customers buy them for many other purposes, such as cleaning up coffee grounds, brushing off letterpress tiles, and even exfoliation in the shower! I tie tampico brushes with nylon cord and with 12-ply waxed Irish linen.

Scrubbers
When tying smaller brooms, the broomcorn is often quite a lot longer than needed. Rather than wasting the broomcorn ends, I like to tie these wonderful short scrubbers. They can take the place of a scouring pad on cast iron or stainless steel cookware. They have quite a bit of scraping power but won’t damage your cast iron the way a metal scraper might. Some people also like these for scrubbing thick-skinned garden vegetables, like carrots and potatoes.
