A sweeper is what most people think of when they hear the word broom. American sweepers are based on the British broom making tradition, in which heather or birch twigs were lashed onto sticks to form traditional besoms. American brooms were similarly round until the Shakers popularized the innovation of stitching corn brooms flat for greater efficiency. I tie sweepers in several styles, including round brooms that hearken back to the original English besoms, Shaker-style flat brooms and their more decorative Appalachian cousins, and a non-traditional style based on the Hawktail whisk broom.
